Amethyst was used as a gemstone by the ancient Egyptians and was largely employed in antiquity for intaglio engraved gems. The Greeks believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle in the belief that amethysts heal people and keep them cool-headed.
The topaz has been known for at least 2000 years was believed to serve in protection against enemies and as a symbol of beauty and splendour.
Peridot is named after the French word peritot, meaning gold, because the mineral can vary towards this colour. Peridot is the National gem of Egypt. Ancient Egyptians knew it as “the gem of the sun.” Peridot was mined for over 3,500 years on St Johns Island.
